Viva La Vida: Background To The Origin, Meaning and Translation

Coldplay may have decided on ‘Viva la Vida’ for the name for the fourth album as far back as March 2007.

‘Viva La Vida’ can have different meanings, and is translated into various phrases, depending on the language and culture. The first meaning that comes to mind of any Spanish speaker when hearing “Viva la Vida” is ‘Live Life’ or ‘Live The Life’.

A reverse translation of ‘Long Live Life’ would be ‘La Vida Vive’, or ‘the life lives on’. But for those born and raised in Mexico (which is where the phrase eminates from) ‘Long Live Life’ translates correctly into ‘Viva la Vida’, and is used to celebrate life. The local Mexican meaning of ‘Viva…’ is to exclaim and celebrate. The picture below was taken outside Frida Kahlo’s house (which nowadays is a museum) last year during the Latin American tour 2007. Chris Martin bought three books about her paintings and her life.

hmm since we’re trying to translate Viva La VIda into I would assume.. English, it would seem like a pretty strange logic to even mention what a reverse translation would be as it has no significance.. anyone who has basic skills of scientific logic and reasoning.. it being trained from an academic course or not, should know that inputting an element into a existing progress is quite different from assuming a result and then attempt to reverse it. found this site while looking for the meaning of the lyrics, but no help, sorry. assuming you were trying to that is.

  3. The song Viva la Vida (IMO), reflects the revolution against King Charles X that accomplished rather little other than bring in a new king to power, Louis-Philippe.

The artwork for Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends is taken from the French Impressionist Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix and is entitled “Liberty Leading the People” circa 1830. The painting was purchased by the French Government of the time yet was not displayed until the final Revolution (1848) that dethroned King Louis-Philippe and placed the newly elected President, Louis Napoleon into power.

..I thought “viva” is the conjugated present tense form of “vivir,” meaning “to live.” ..so the whole celebrate life thing kind of throws me off..

I think it means Hail to life… I found that on a website and I think that makes a lot more sense… just because if you think of some commertials that The word Viva is in it doesn’t make sense. but thats just me….

ok viva la vida is french. i think its like long living soul or some thing. the songs about the french revolution. make sense now?
when he sais i use to rule the world hes saying he was the french king brought down. ok and the french revolution begins with a war but it mostly conflic thats why his casles stands apon pillers of salt and sand. also why he will hiers sant peters calling his name. as in a cort. he can’t explane why he had do loose his kindome. and thats why he sead who whould ever want to be king. and most of coldplays songs are on historick moments. like vilent hill is the cold war. you should check the history books next song he makes XD. i’m rong on some ot those probably but not the french revolution thing. thats what its about.

The song ‘Viva La Vida’ is not dedicated to Bush.
However, the song ‘Lost’, in my opinion, is about the U.S.A and it’s fall from grace.
Big fish/Little pond lyrics relate to bully tactics and how they have backfired.
Listen to the song and relate it to all the turmoil the U.S has been in the past 40 years, particularly since 9/11.
